NuMED, Inc. is a manufacturer of catheters for children with congenital heart disease. These catheters are used by interventional pediatric cardiologists throughout the world. Located in the scenic Adirondack foothills, in Hopkinton, New York, they are responsible for the design, feasibility testing, FDA testing, and introduction of many catheter designs, including the Tyshak® and Z-MED™ Dilatation Catheters, along with a number of custom designed catheters. NuMED utilizes its own extrusion facility for extremely fast turnaround times and has the ability to bring a project from the conceptual phase into full production with documentation and FDA GMP requirements in place. Please meet... Allen J. Tower, President & CEO of NuMED. When Mr. Tower was considering locations for his facility in 1982, he believed that technology had made the world a much smaller place -- so, being next to a research hospital or in a city no longer seemed necessary for success. His search brought him to the foothills of the Adirondacks where he recently put the finishing touches on his log cabin on the banks of the beautiful St. Regis River. "This is an outstanding location for someone who wants to get away from the traffic, and the costs, of doing business in the city. I can be more competitive because of the lower costs associated with doing business here -- after all, when you add everything up, it's what's left over that counts." |

Please meet… Dr. John Hopkinson, Vice President/General Manager, Lake Placid Operations of Upstate USA, Inc.. Dr. Hopkinson realizes his company’s Adirondack location helps in several key areas – employee recruitment and business to business partnerships. “With these surroundings, we can more easily recruit the top talent we need, keep them here with a modern facility that overlooks the high peaks of Lake Placid, and at a cost of living that is very competitive.” Strong business relationships with such critical partners as courier/shipping services, service technicians, and other biotech/biomed businesses is another benefit found in the small Adirondack community, “I am able to get my refrigerators repaired in the middle of the night. I just wouldn’t have that relationship if I was in a fishbowl with hundreds of other companies.” |

Bioentrepreneurs who are attracted to the great outdoors and associated sports activities, yet desire to be serious players in the biopharma arena, should give serious thought to locating their start up biotech initiatives in this New York wonderland known as the Adirondacks." |
